Red Eye (Red Eye)
There are many causes of red and congested eyes, including infections, inflammations, allergies, ruptured blood vessels, and trauma. If the white of the eye (sclera) appears red or pinkish, you may be suffering from one of the following conditions:
- Conjunctivitis – The causes are many and include viruses, bacteria, allergies, exposure to chemicals, and more.
- Eye Allergies – Eye allergies can be seasonal or triggered by exposure to an allergen that enters the eye. The eyes are usually very itchy, with excessive watery discharge and swollen eyes.
- Ruptured Blood Vessel (subconjunctival haemorrhage – subconjunctival bleeding) – Exertion, lifting heavy weights, rubbing the eyes, high blood pressure, blood thinners, and unknown causes can lead to the rupture of small blood vessels under the conjunctiva.
- Eye Trauma – Eye trauma can definitely cause a red eye along with pain and blurred vision. The trauma itself can scratch the cornea, cause a traumatic cataract or retinal detachment of the retina and other complications; therefore in cases of trauma, see an eye doctor immediately.
